The nüvi 755T comes preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps from Navteq for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin’s interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Garmin’s patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location.

Important Product Information: This device features a “screen lock” feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2×5 and 7×5 Garmin units. If you slide the “Power” key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the “Power” key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for “Pedestrian” mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. With Lane Guidance, the nüvi alerts you to which lane you need to be in for upcoming turns. In the image above, the three middle lanes of this seven-lane highway are highlighted.

Lane Guidance
With the new Lane Guidance feature built into the nüvi 7×5 series, you’ll never question which lane you should be driving in again. It provides you with a view of what lane you should be in for upcoming turns. In most areas, the traffic broadcasts are continuous–there’s no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a “silent” FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

HotFix Satellite Prediciton
Garmin’s HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. With HotFix, your nüvi remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you’ve found the best router, the “Route Planning” feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, “the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls.” The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we’re talking about). I’ll be honest…..I researched GPS devices for over six weeks before deciding to purchase this Garmin model (nuvi 755). I honestly believe my research paid off, and after a month of use, including a cross-country trip, the device has performed beyond my expectations.

There are already plenty of reviews espousing the performance highlights of the nuvi 755, so I will not waste your time by repeating those. With the caveat that I’m extremely pleased with the device and purchase, please allow me to discuss a couple of the ‘not so good’ aspects of the device. To reiterate, none of these minor problems are show-stoppers.

MINOR PROBLEM #1: When the device arrived, and I read the instructions, I learned I was authorized ‘one’ map update. I immediately proceeded to the Garmin website to take advantage of this free service. There were two options for obtaining the update: 1. You could download an extremely large file from Garmin (taking hours to download), or, 2. You could request a CD (or other media) and have the map update mailed to you. I chose the CD option. Unfortunately, the CD option costs , and after the charge showed up as ‘pending’ on my credit card, the charge never went through, there was no explanation from Garmin for the transaction never going through, and I’m still waiting for the map update. I can only speculate on the reasons for the delay. I have not tried to resolve the matter because I have completed my initial extensive use of the device (a cross-country trip), and it’s not urgent.

MINOR PROBLEM #2: While researching the various Garmin products, it was difficult to determine which accessories were included in the purchase, and which non-inclusive accessories perhaps ’should’ be purchased for immediate use. For example, I did not know the device’s internal battery could be recharged by attaching it to your desktop computer. Hence, I purchased a separate AC charging device (total cost of less than ). I later found out it was not necessary for me to purchase the charging device, although in retrospect, I’m glad I did, since another vendor was selling the AC charging device for less than half the cost that Amazon was offering!

MINOR PROBLEM #3: The device is easy to handle, but due to its size and fragile internal electronic components, it is also EASY to accidentally drop it on a hard surface, and inadvertently destroy your investment. I believe Garmin needs to offer a low-cost cover that will allow customers to handle/use the device, while providing some protection from accidentally dropping it on the ground. A competing vendor has an after-market product that seems to perform this protection function. Unfortunately, it sells for (which is more than 11% of the total cost of the nuvi), but is possibly well-worth the additional charge.

In conclusion, this is an excellent product, and I believe it’s an excellent value. I encourage commentary on the minor problems I have discussed.

Garmin 755t review - Steven Clines - Whidbey Island Wa.
This is my second Garmin and I have to say I love this GPS. Garmin uses the same format as the first unit, but with many more features. I know this is a small issue, but I also have a Tom Tom 730. When you reach your location with the Garmin 755t tells you which side of the street your looking for. This is not the case with the Tom Tom. Along with this the 730 seem to be more accurate in being right on when an address is given.

Works great. Map update is a bit buggy I finally got it to start downloading. Recalculates route fast. Slow response to second character typed in while using location search mode. Really happy with it so far.

I’m not a stranger to the Nuvi having already owned a 150W, so I expected the 755T to work just as well. Since I live in a heavily congested area here on Long Island, I was very intrigued on whether the traffic feature would help avoid traffic problems. On my very first trip with the 755T to upstate NY, the device warned me of a major slowdown on the Long Island Expressway and guided me around the problem. Throughout the trip the device was flawless with it’s directions and warnings and I couldn’t be more pleased. One comment I might make is that software and map updates from the Garmin website can ve very slow. When I registered the device with Garmin, I noticed that a map and software upgrade was available and decided to upgrade the software first. After almost three hours I called customer service and after talking with the technician got the device fully upgraded with new software in about five minutes. However, I could not have known about the abbreviated procedure without calling Garmin. Their technicians are excellent and before any upgrades are attempted, you should call Garmin first.
